Your Abandoned Cart Rate Is Lying to You

I thought my abandoned cart rate was 72%. After fixing a checkout bug that silently blocked mobile payments, it dropped to 58%. Sometimes "abandoned carts" are actually broken checkouts.

For six months, I accepted that my abandoned cart rate was "high but normal." 72%. Industry average, right? Everyone says ecommerce cart abandonment is 70%. So I focused on recovery emails, exit-intent popups, discount codes at checkout.

None of it moved the needle. Because the carts weren't being abandoned. The checkout was broken.

How I Finally Found It

I was reviewing my store's analytics and noticed something odd: the abandonment rate on desktop was 58%. On mobile, it was 84%. That's not a "mobile users are less committed" gap. That's a "something is broken on mobile" gap.

I tested checkout on my phone. Worked fine. Tested on my wife's phone — same model, same OS version — checkout failed. The difference? My phone had Apple Pay set up. Hers didn't. The checkout page had a bug where if Apple Pay/Google Pay wasn't available, the manual credit card form wouldn't render. Customers saw a blank payment section and bounced.

Three months of this bug. Estimated lost revenue: $2,400-3,600.

The Abandonment vs. Failure Detective Kit

Before you accept your cart abandonment rate as "normal," check these:

  1. Desktop vs mobile gap > 15%? Something is probably broken on the lagging platform.
  2. Specific product pages with > 90% abandonment? Check those pages individually — the Add-to-Cart button or variant selector might be broken.
  3. Abandonment rate suddenly spiked on a specific date? Cross-reference with your app install/update history. Something changed that day.
  4. Test checkout on a borrowed device. Not yours. Someone else's phone, especially an older model. The bugs that affect the most people are the ones you can't reproduce on your own device.

Real abandonment looks like: users add to cart, browse a bit more, then leave. Broken checkout looks like: users reach the payment page, spend 5 seconds, and bounce. Check your session recordings or heatmaps — the difference is usually obvious once you look.
