What Shopify Sellers Are Complaining About Right Now

A roundup of real pain points bubbling up in seller communities this month — from the scripts deprecation disaster to the never-ending app billing confusion.

Every month, I dig through Shopify seller communities — Reddit, the official forums, Twitter threads, developer discussions — and surface the pain points merchants are actually dealing with. Not the stuff Shopify's changelog mentions. The stuff keeping sellers up at night.

Here's what's bubbling up in July 2026.

1. The Scripts Deprecation Quietly Broke Checkouts

Pain level: High. When Shopify Scripts stopped executing on June 30, 2026, checkout didn't visibly break. No error banners. No notifications. Custom discount rules, shipping logic, and payment gating simply vanished — silently. Merchants discovered it through symptoms: margins looking thin, payment methods appearing that should've been hidden, shipping rates that should never have been offered. "You find out through symptoms instead of alerts" as one developer put it.

The migration path exists (Shopify Functions), but merchants who missed the memo — and there were many — woke up to a checkout that was subtly, invisibly broken in ways that directly cost money.

2. New Theme = Zero Sales (And Nobody Knows Why)

Pain level: Medium. A seller running profitable Google PMax campaigns for two months decided to freshen up their store with a new theme. Published it. Sales went to zero. They thought it was a coincidence — until the community pointed out: "Did you test checkout after the theme change?"

Theme changes can break checkout in ways that aren't obvious. JavaScript dependencies shift. CSS classes get renamed. An app's script that depended on the old theme's markup silently fails. The site looks fine. Checkout doesn't work. The seller doesn't find out until the revenue drop becomes impossible to ignore.

3. "I'm Paying for Multiple Apps and I Haven't Even Launched Yet"

Pain level: Chronic. A merchant shared this in r/shopify: "I added reviews with Judge.me, then a loyalty program, and suddenly I'm paying for multiple apps on top of Shopify… while I have barely launched and made sales."

This is the pre-launch app trap: you install every tool that sounds useful during setup. Free trials feel like free decisions. But trials expire, often unnoticed, and suddenly you're paying $100+/month in app subscriptions for a store that hasn't made its first sale. The apps don't care if you've launched. They just bill.

4. App Billing Cycles vs Shopify Invoices: Still Confusing Everyone

Pain level: Chronic. Apps bill on independent 30-day cycles. Shopify bills on its own monthly cycle. These two things don't sync. A merchant uninstalls an app, thinks they're done, and two months later finds charges they can't explain — because the app's billing cycle was 3 weeks out when they hit uninstall.

This has been a known issue in Shopify's developer community since at least March 2025. Developers complain about it from their side (confused, angry merchants). Merchants complain about it from their side (unexpected charges). Shopify's official position is "working as designed."

5. The $1 Trial → $49 Charge Pipeline

Pain level: Sporadic but brutal. App offers $1 first month. Merchant tries it for 3 days. Forgets. Gets charged $49 on day 31. Support says "no refunds — it's in our terms."

This pattern has gotten so common that multiple sellers now say they avoid any app with a "$1 trial" entirely. The trial-to-full-price conversion is designed to catch people who forget — and it works. The $1 isn't the price. It's the bait.

The Pattern

If you zoom out, one theme connects every complaint: silent failures with financial consequences. Shopify doesn't alert you when your checkout breaks. Apps don't remind you before trials expire. Billing cycles don't match. You find out through symptoms — a revenue dip, an unexpected charge, an angry customer — not through proactive warnings.

This is why sellers who've been burned start building their own safety nets: manual checkout tests, monthly billing audits, app uninstall calendars. The platform won't protect you from these things. You have to protect yourself.
