How I Cut My Monthly Shopify App Bill by 64%
$247/month → $89/month. Here's every app I cut, every app I kept, and the decision framework that made it painless.
The Starting Point: $247/month for 17 Apps
I run a mid-size Shopify store doing about $15K/month in revenue. Over two years, I'd accumulated 17 apps. Some essential. Some installed during late-night "optimization" rabbit holes. Some I'd genuinely forgotten about. Together they cost me $247/month — nearly $3,000/year.
The Framework
I evaluated every app against three questions:
- Revenue impact: If I remove this app, will revenue go down? (Yes → keep. No → cut candidate.)
- Usage frequency: Do I use this at least once a week? (No → cut candidate.)
- Replacement cost: Can another app I'm already keeping do this? Or can Shopify do it natively? (Yes → cut.)
What Got Cut
| App | Monthly | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Second popup app | $14 | Email platform already has popups |
| Dedicated cart recovery | $9 | Email platform handles this natively |
| Countdown timer | $8 | Only used during sales — 4x/year |
| Trust badge widget | $12 | Added 1.2s load time, no measurable conversion lift |
| Instagram feed embed | $6 | Embedded once, never updated |
| Duplicate SEO analyzer | $20 | Theme already includes basic SEO fields |
| Advanced analytics | $39 | Google Analytics + Shopify reports are sufficient |
| Social proof popup | $15 | Annoying. Low CTR. Customers complained. |
| Currency converter | $10 | Shopify Markets handles this now |
| Abandoned browse tracker | $25 | Never converted a single recovery |
Total cut: $158/month → $1,896/year.
What I Kept ($89/month)
The remaining 7 apps all either directly drive revenue or save me significant time. Email marketing (essential). Reviews app (social proof = revenue). Shipping calculator (reduces cart abandonment). Help desk (customer service efficiency). The rest: theme, a backup tool, and a form builder I actually use weekly.
The Most Surprising Cut
The $39/month analytics app was the hardest to cut — I'd convinced myself I needed "advanced analytics." But when I actually checked, I hadn't logged into it in two months. I was looking at Shopify's built-in reports and Google Analytics instead. The $39 app was just sitting there, billing me, because unsubscribing felt like admitting I'd made a bad purchase.
If you run more than 10 apps, I guarantee you can cut at least two without losing anything. Probably more.
