The Hidden Cost of "Install and Forget"

Every "I'll try this for a week" app install is a potential recurring charge that outlives its usefulness by months. Here's what app rot cost me — and the 10-minute cleanup routine I use now.

The Black Friday App Graveyard

Last November, I went on an app-installing spree for Black Friday. Countdown timer. Urgency badges. Social proof popup. Cart drawer with free shipping bar. I installed six new apps in two days. They worked great for the sale weekend. Sales went up 40%.

Fast forward to March. I'm reviewing my monthly expenses and notice my Shopify bill is $85 higher than I remember. I check the app list. Four of the six Black Friday apps are still installed. Still billing. I haven't used a countdown timer in four months. I haven't run a sale in three. But the apps don't care — they just keep charging.

Total waste: $47/month × 4 months = $188 on apps that served their purpose in November and should have been uninstalled in December.

⚠️ "Install and forget" is the default behavior. Shopify doesn't remind you about unused apps. Developers don't pause billing when you stop using the app. You have to actively manage your app list or it manages your wallet.

Three Types of App Rot

1. The Campaign Zombie

Installed for a specific sale, event, or launch. Did its job. Never uninstalled. Now charges you $9.99/month indefinitely for features you haven't touched since the campaign ended.

Examples: countdown timers, sale badges, urgency popups, launch announcement bars, seasonal theme add-ons.

2. The "I'll Try It" Ghost

Installed during a free trial. You opened it once, maybe twice. Forgot it existed. The trial expired. Now it's a paid subscription you've never actually used.

Worst case I've seen: A seller paying $39/month for an analytics app they installed during a trial — and hadn't logged into in 8 months. That's $312.

3. The Feature Overlap

You installed App B, not realizing App A (which you already pay for) now includes the same feature. Both keep billing. Neither tells you about the other.

✅ The 10-minute cleanup: Go to your Shopify admin → Apps. Sort by "last used" if available. Any app you can't remember using in the last 30 days → click it → check when you last configured anything → if > 60 days, uninstall. Do this right now. You will find at least one zombie.

Why "Just Keep It" Is a Trap

The mental math is: "It's only $7.99/month, what if I need it again?" But you won't. And if you do, you can reinstall it in 60 seconds. Most apps save your settings even after uninstall. The "what if" is costing you real money every single month.

Seven apps at $8/month you "might need someday" = $672/year. For apps you don't use.

My Current Routine

First day of every month, 10 minutes: open Shopify admin → Apps → review each one. Ask: "Did I use this last month? Will I use it next month?" If either answer is no → uninstall. Takes 10 minutes. Saves $50-100/month. Best hourly rate of any task in my business.
