Shopify Scripts Died June 30 — Did Your Checkout Survive?
When Shopify Scripts stopped executing, custom discount rules, shipping logic, and payment gating vanished silently. Here is how to check if you were affected and what to do about it.
June 30, 2026 came and went. Most merchants didn't notice anything. But some woke up to a checkout that was subtly, invisibly broken — and they're still discovering the damage.
What Actually Happened
Shopify Scripts — the old Ruby-based system for customizing checkout — stopped executing on June 30. The replacement is Shopify Functions. The migration has been announced for over a year. But here's the thing about platform migrations: merchants running a store don't read developer changelogs.
When Scripts stopped:
- Custom discount rules vanished. "Buy 2 get 1 free" promotions simply stopped applying.
- Shipping logic reverted to defaults. If you had "free shipping over $75," it might now show as "free shipping for everyone" or not at all — depending on your fallback settings.
- Payment method gating disappeared. If you were hiding certain payment methods for specific products or customer tags, they all became visible again.
The worst part: no error messages, no admin notifications, no "your Scripts have stopped working" banner. The checkout just silently reverted to its pre-customization state.
How to Check If You're Affected
- Go to your Shopify admin → Settings → Checkout
- Look for any customizations. If you see references to "Shopify Scripts" or "Ruby" — you're affected.
- Place a test order with every discount code, every shipping scenario, every payment method you offer.
- If any behavior is different from what you expect — your Scripts died and you didn't know.
The Migration Path
Shopify Functions (built with JavaScript/TypeScript or WebAssembly) is the replacement. The migration is not trivial for complex customizations. If you had a developer who wrote your Scripts, contact them. If you used an app that relied on Scripts, check if the app has been updated for Functions.
For simple discount rules and shipping logic, Shopify's built-in discounts and shipping profiles now cover many use cases that previously required Scripts. Check if you can simplify before rebuilding.
