Up to 8 Public Plans: How App Developers Are Restructuring Pricing
A breakdown of what changed and why it matters.
A Shopify developer posted this in the official community forum last year. It got dozens of replies from other developers confirming the same issue. But merchants almost never see it — because it’s in the developer forums, not the merchant help center.
The gist: a merchant uninstalls an app, and keeps getting charged for two more months.

Shopify app billing runs on independent 30-day cycles — separate from Shopify’s monthly subscription invoice. When you uninstall an app:
Shopify support confirmed this is a “known limitation”: refunds can’t be processed until the charge is finalized, which can take weeks. The official workaround is “use app credits” — which requires the app developer to manually issue them.
⚠️ How common is this? In the developer forum thread, multiple app developers confirmed they’ve had confused merchants contact them about post-uninstall charges. One developer said “Shopify forces you to use their Billing API which has bugs like these.” The issue has been open since at least March 2025 and still isn’t fully resolved.
A separate but related problem: apps offering “$1 for the first month” trials. Multiple merchants report:
One merchant reported being charged nearly $150 CAD for an app they used for 48 hours. Another reported being double-billed because the app’s billing cycle and Shopify’s invoice cycle overlapped confusingly.
There’s also a loophole merchants have been exploiting on the flip side: subscribe to an app’s annual plan (with 30% discount), uninstall before the 30-day mark, get a pro-rated refund from Shopify, then reinstall on a cheaper monthly plan. The Billing API can’t detect this pattern, and developers are the ones losing money on it.
The whole system is fragile. Both merchants and developers get burned depending on which side of the bug they’re on.
✅ Quick check: Go to your Shopify admin right now → Settings → Billing. Do you recognize every app charge on the list? If not, one of them might be a zombie billing from an app you already uninstalled.
